Click here to select another year December 10th, 2014---: Another strong noreaster affected the northeast yesterday, bringing over 3 inches of rain to parts of the area, mine included! The past two coastal storms to affect us have been too warm to bring big snows all the way down to the coast, but that's not uncommon for this early in the season. However, if this active pattern continues, I suspect it won't be long now until we start seeing the flakes fly in NYC. And from what I am seeing in the latest models, that trend of storminess will continue through the end of the month. Below are the rainfall totals and peak wind gust measurments for the Tri-State area of NY/NJ & CT. ********************STORM TOTAL RAINFALL******************** LOCATION STORM TOTAL TIME/DATE COMMENTS RAINFALL OF /INCHES/ MEASUREMENT CONNECTICUT ...FAIRFIELD COUNTY... WHITE PLAINS AIRPORT 38 1250 PM 12/09 ASOS November 21st, 2014---: Epic snow fall has been seen in and around the Buffalo, NY area over the past few days. I don't use that term often at all, but that really is the only word that accurately describes how much snow fell on that area. Up to 88 inches in some towns! That's about 7 feet of snow. Incredible! This weekend will bring milder temperatures, which in turn will create another potentially dangerous situation, rapid snow melt and flooding. It looks like the milder break will be brief as well. Some of the models are now beginning to hint at a potential storm for Thanksgiving Day, not up in the Buffalo area necessarily, but along coastal areas of the northeast this go around. Still way too early to determine whether this will be an all rain event south and east of the I-95 corridor, all snow, or a mix....or, if a storm will even materialize at all. If it does, it will wreak havoc on one of the busiest travel days of the year. Stay tuned! This could be looked at as either good, or bad, depending on if you like snow and cold. For me, I love the snow, and I love a good snow storm. I figure it this way, if it's going to be cold, it might as well snow! And snow lovers might get their wish this upcoming winter if preliminary forecasts are correct. Interested in some details? Click on the picture link below for a detailed analysis by NYMetroWeather on exactly WHY the current thinking is for another cold and snowy winter for us here in NYC, and the northeast as a whole. September 6th, 2014---: The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK outlined a slight risk for severe weather that covered the NYC Metro, and much of the northeast today. I waited for storms to initiate west of the city, and then headed down to Rockaway Beach for an intercept. The only problem was that when I arrived, the storms began weakening on their approach to the city. This happens all too often here in NYC due to our close proximity to the Ocean, and in turn, the cool stable marine layer. So, I headed back home, arriving around 5pm. I had all but given up on the day when another, very think line of storms went up west of the city around 10pm. This line was along the actual cold front, and while I had my doubts that the storms would survive the trip into the city, I was still hoping they would. As it turns out, there was just enough instability left to keep them going, and what a light show we had! Several, brilliant cloud to ground lightning strikes occured, followed by brief but heavy rains. All in all a great top off to the evening, and a classic "front porch chase"! The video is now up in the "Storm Chasing Videos" section. Head on over and check it out! September 2nd, 2014---: Two days back on August 31st we had a round of severe storms move through NYC around 4:30 in the afternoon. I noticed a line of storms developing over central and northern New Jersey, so I jumped in my Xterra, and headed up to Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, Queens. Gantry Park is located right on the East River overlooking the Manhattan skyline, and what a view from there! I filmed the approaching storms, and shot some nice lightning over the skyline, and even captured a few time-lapse sequences as the storms approached the city. It wasn't long though before park security harrased me and asked me to leave due to the approaching storms. Apparently since it's a state park, and not a city park, they can ask you to leave when threatening weather approaches. I agreed initially, and then waited for him to move on, before tucking myself behind a wall and then continued filming haha. I will admit though, there was a significant lightning threat at this location due to the fact that I was right on the water, with no real shelter in sight. So I understood he was just doing his job, but at the same time, I had one to do as well and accepted the risk I was taking on by staying at this location. With that said, I did however retreat to a safe location when the storm grew close. Below is a still shot taken from my video at Gantry Park. The picture is a clickable link which will take you to my video from that day! More hot and humid weather is on tap for today, and as a matter of fact, today could also end up being the hottest day of the entire Summer (and 2014) if we reach the 92/93 degree mark. More storms are possible later this evening as a cold front approaches. August 30th, 2014---: It certainly has been a long time since I've updated this page, about 7 months to be exact! Well, I've been lazy I'll admit it, but there is another reason as well....the weather hasn't exactly been exciting around here. We had a seriously delayed Spring, which saw trees bloom here in the city in mid/late April! A full month behind almost. And that translated to cooler than average summer so far. NYC has only seen five 90 degree days so far this summer. While it hasn't exactly been a cold summer, it definitely hasn't been very summer "like" either for the most part. That is due, in part, to the negative NAO that we've been in pretty much all of 2014. A negative NAO usually equates to lower than average heights in the east, in other words, more eastern troughs dominate than ridges of high pressure. The troughs bring in unseasonably cool air to the northeast, and that is what we have been seeing literally all year. This is only one piece of it though, essentially the pattern has been locked in for months and months now, with no real signs that anything will change anytime soon. However, we do have breaks from this on occasion, and one such break is on the horizon. More summerlike weather will return to NYC this Labor Day weekend, and will last much, if not all of next week. Temperates in the upper 80s to low 90s will be common, and with that heat will come the humidity and high dew points. Thunderstorm chances will also rise over the coming days, with the best chances for storms both tomorrow (Sunday) and again on Tuesday. If anything exciting happens, I'll post about it here. In other news, I will be live streaming any and all severe weather and winter weather threats through my YouTube channel now! Updates on when I plan to stream will be posted on my Twitter Feed, so be sure to follow me for the latest updates on that. Beginning next week, I will have the capability to live stream in HD for the first time. I'm pretty excited about that! Below is the current NAO chart showing the negative to neutral patter we have been in for many months now. An upward trend to neutral will begin shortly (coinciding with the warm-up this upcoming week) but then it appears we go back to more of the same. Stay tuned. February 12th, 2014---: Here we go again! Another major winter storm is heading our way with up to a foot of snow in parts of the area. This forecast, as has been the case with pretty much all of the snow storms this year, is a tough one to call. Exactly where the rain/snow line sets up is still in question. Right now the official forecast for NYC is for 8-10 inches of snow, with lesser amounts over Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. If we get more mixing, we could end up on the lower end of those amounts, less mixing and we could end up with over a foot of snow here in the city. I'll have another update once the afternoon models are in. Below are the latest snow fall totals forecast from the NWS here in NYC. February 4th, 2014---: What an active weather pattern, we just wrapped up one major winter storm yesterday here in NYC, and now we're already bracing for another storm later tonight and into the day on Wednesday! This storm won't feature a ton of snow, only a few inches are expected in and around the NYC Metro. However, the snow is expected to begin mixing with freezing rain and ice towards dawn, which will be sure to wreak havoc on the morning rush hour! So, to sum up, if you don't have to be on the roads tomorrow, then don't be! Below is the ice accumulation forecast via the NWS in New York City. February 3rd, 2014---: And the hits keep coming! We've entered into a very active and stormy pattern here in the northeast. Another major snow storm hit the NYC metro today with 7.5 inches of VERY heavy wet snow recorded here at my place in Rego Park/Middle Village, Queens. And it's not over yet. Another significant snow and ice event is on the horizon for later tomorrow night and into the day on Wednesday, which could bring another 4-8 inches of snow to the NYC Metro, and up to 1/2 inch of ice on top of that! Areas to our north could see upwards of a foot of snow! Details to follow tomorrow morning once I take a gander at the 00z model runs which will come in later tonight. In the meantime, here are the latest snow fall totals from today's winter storm. CONNECTICUT ...FAIRFIELD COUNTY... With ratios in the 15:1, to as much as 25:1 in heavier bands, that could equate to around a foot of snow for NYC! This is a far cry from the initial inch or two forecast just two days ago. A classic example as to how difficult it is to forecast these winter weather events more than a day or two out. A quick check at the 06z runs, and everything still looks to be on target, no big changes so far. The key to all of this, at least in terms of who will see the highest snow fall totals, is where the heavier bands of snow set up shop. For now, the National Weather Service is forecasting the highest potential in the NYC/Nassau County, LI vicinity. Whether this verifies or not remains to be seen. But those areas that do receive the heavier bands could see several inches more than surrounding areas. I expect there to be a relatively wide range of snow fall totals once this storm winds up tomorrow. My thinking right now based off everything I have seen is for 9-11 inches for NYC. However, it could end up being more if those heavier bands of snow do in fact set up shop over NYC. For details on the Winter Storm Warning that is in effect for the entire area, Click Here Image Below: Latest snow fall totals forecast from the NWS in NYC showing 10-14 inches possible for the NYC Metro, and Long Island! January 20th, 2014---: The latest 12z model suite is in and after looking them over, it was apparent that all the guidance was coming in wetter than last night's runs. What does this all equate to? Well, on average 1 inch of rain is the equivalent of 10 inches of snow. However, with a very cold arctic airmass in place, those ratios will be more like 20:1/25:1, instead of 10:1. As it stands right now, the NYC Metro looks to receive around 1/2 inch of liquid from this winter storm, but in snow fall amounts that could be as much as 8-10 inches! Considering that yesterday at this time we were only expecting a dusting to an inch, much has obviously changed over the last 24 hours. The forecast models had a tough time locking on to this particular storm, and that is why many times when it comes to winter storms, things don't come into focus until 12-24 hours out. How I explain it to people is like this. If the forecast calls for 1/2 inch of rain, and an inch ends up falling, nobody really notices that. Rain is rain, the ground is wet, end of story. But, that is the difference roughly between 5 inches of snow, and 10 inches of snow, and at times even more than that. So the slightest difference in liquid equivalent, has HUGE impacts on snow fall amounts. This is one of the main reasons why it's very difficult to forecast winter weather events. The slightest change in track also has huge impacts as well. It's not over just yet, we're still about 24 hours out so more changes to the forecast are possible. I'll have another update early tomorrow morning. Image Below: Latest snow fall totals forecast from the NWS in NYC showing a general 8-10 inches for the NYC Metro, and up to a foot or more over Long Island! January 20th, 2014---: Forecast models have trended much wetter this morning in regards to a winter storm that is set to effect the NYC Metro and surrounding tomorrow and tomorrow night. One thing that is really helping bump up the potential snow fall totals is that we'll have a lot of frigid air in place, and as a result the snow/liquid ratios will be very high. Instead of the more typical 10:1 ratios (10 inches of snow for every 1 inch of liquid) we could be looking at ratios as high as 20:1. So that 1/3 inch of liquid that is expected tomorrow could dump 6-8 inches in and around NYC. Top Image: Latest snow fall totals forecast from the NWS in NYC showing a general 4-8 inches for the area. Middle Image: Latest 06z GFS model showing a strengthening coastal storm very near the 70/40 benchmark tomorrow evening. The 06z run showing up to 1/2 inch of precip for this storm, which could bump up snow fall totals a little more if it verifies. Bottom Image: 06z NAM model showing a strengthening 992mb low passing very near the 70/40 benchmark tomorrow evening. The NAM model is also showing upwards of 1/2 inch of precip out of this storm. Very interested what the 12z model runs have to say later this morning. I'll have another full update later this afternoon, once the 12z model suite is in. January 3rd, 2014---: 2014 is off to a stormy, and bitter cold start! We received a total of 8 inches of snow here at my place in Queens, NY...and that seemed to be the average for most of the NYC area. Here are the preliminary snow fall totals from around the NYC/NJ/CT area from the National Weather Service. I'll post the final snow fall totals here either later today, or tomorrow morning when they become available. ********************STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL******************** CONNECTICUT ...FAIRFIELD COUNTY... Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the NYC Metro, and Blizzard Warnings are now in effect for Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. I just checked the latest forecast models, and I agree with the NWS forecast of 6-8 inches of snow for NYC, and up to 8-10 inches for Long Island. The bigger story is going to be the extreme cold coming in later tonight through Saturday morning. Once the winds whip up later tonight, wind chills will drop well below zero, even here in NYC. Blowing snow will create white out conditions at times late tonight. I plan to live stream from my place in Queens, NY beginning later this evening once the steadier snows move in. Check back around 6pm this evening and click on the "Live Streaming" link to view the stream! The coldest air in several years is on the way so be sure to bundle up big time if you plan to be out and about the next few days.
